Google Account - all of our education is geared for google account holders. A free gmail account wors but a google workspace account is more ideal Minimum google workspace account is $8 / month and you can pay month to month. It does require that you have a domain reserved ($11/year). If you don't have a domain reserved, do that through Porkbun or Name Cheap. Do NOT do it through google, goodaddy or any other at this time. If you do NOT have a Google Workspace account you can still do much of this with a free gmail account. You can not do this without a gmail account at a minimum as we use a Google Apps Script application for immersive eduation and that is accessed via a google spreadsheet.
Power - 120v The use of a residential outlet in your home or office on a circuit that is not overloaded is all that's needed initially. As for power for your servers -- we will start you out with a few cloud services that are below $10 to 20/month all in. If on a budget and that's too much, all you need is a free gmail account to get going. Eventually some of you will study Server Hardware, Routers, Racks, Wires and Data Centers. Power will be more relevant then. That ed is beyond our current offerrings.
Hardware - Computer You will need any computer (desktop/laptop) with any O/S that supports the Chrome browser and multiple monitors via direct connection or connected external graphics cards . Monitors - A Minimum of 3 monitors is suggested but 4 to 6 is highly recommended. External vido cards cost $30 each. You do NOT learn full stack dev nor execute it with a singular monitor. You can do minor tasks tthat way and suffer for short term as needed but to properly learn and Do, it's 3 or more. A PC or Mac is preferred for starters but a chromebook or other unix system can do fine too Keyboard and Mouse External keyboard and mouse required (not touchpad) Printer - you need an injet printer at a minimum. color preferred black and white okay. we recommend the Epson due to lack of printer cartridges (ink refills instead). Routers and Servers You can/will use your own routers and computer as learning tools -- and for production we engage with free or low cost services. No major investement needed in servers to learn or do ever, actually. BUT extra monitors are a must. High Speed Scanner - not required. ideal but not for this course. A scanner on your phone is fine.
On Day 1 (or a few days later) you will be given a copy of a Google Apps Project that is a commercial grade DNS Server Management system that has been designed for Software as a Service (Saas) with you as the platform owner. It's novel in every way imaginable.
You are going to use a relational database built in a google spreadsheet that allows your clients to use your website backend to create and update their own Domain ownership and DNS records in your system -- which then automatically synchs those records with remote DNS servers sitting in other parts of the world -- all via a Google Apps project. Your cost to rent a remote DNS server for this is $4 to 8$ per month minimum and $20 max for the basic commercial package needed to start a real business.
This is far beyond anything Google ever invisioned for their "Single Page App" end point and it goes to show what "can be done" with internet technology if you understand "request-response basics" , "a little html, css and javascript", and the digital eductaion needs of the next generation for our communal success.
Your immersive first project includes:
Website - it's a full website with a graphical front end, login page and backend management system -- all written in HTML, CSS, and javascript (client and server side). No frameworks and a lot of ajax that is not typically nor desirable for this type of application (but required to give you a single point learning platform). It relies on Google Scripting objects as needed for the data management. A Google Apps Project is NOT an ideal system for buiding a simple website. This is very complex relative to other options. Learn here and the rest will be easier.
Authentication Engine - it includes a commercial grade, multi Tier User Management and Authentication system with Platform, Tenant and Client user levels and multiple auth levels (Saas level architecture. You'll never need more.)
RDBMS - it uses google sheets flat files for the basis for a relational database management system (RDBMS). You will learn about spreadsheets as flat files vs RDBMs and learn how to turn flat files into RDBMs. This will be as complex as it gets for managing data. All other applcations will be easier.
Client Side Form handling - You will use digital slieght of hand client side form handling to manage forms, form inputs and delete records
DOM Manipulation and Advanced CSS - you will use DOM manipulation for client side data manageament. You will use DOM manipulation combined with advanced CSS concepts to show and hide columns on the fly.
AUD-G engine - It has a commercial grade Add, Update and Delete engine to assist with rapid scaling of database requirements. The G stands for get. This is a modern upgrade to the term "CRUD" that comes from the 60's but means the same thing (Create, Read, Update, Delete). AUD-G sounds cooler for sure.
Data Validation Engines - it includes data validation engines for both client side and server side validation. These integrate with spreadsheet tools for configuration file generation and rapid testing of the server side engine.
Console Logging engine - it has a complex engine for console logging to assist with rapid troubleshooting that is not provided well in chrome for client side composite applications.
Server to Server communction - it includes synch'd connections with remote Unix servers running DNS server software and systems as well as a remote webserver needed for bounce messaging for faux A record configuration.
Dev Tools - we had to build out dev tools to help fill in blanks where the Google Apps IDE and Chrome Browser failure reporting falls short.
Documenation Engine - it has a documentation that may be included
This is a PhD level programming project and working business model that you are goign to get to use to start your Full Stack educational experience.
Below are the topics that you will learn about immersively as you work through your orientation and education to a commercial grade software solution. Your focus will be learning about how the sofware you are given works. During that process side trips will be taken into other topics parallel to what you re learning about.
Hardware etc - Hardware We cover computers, peripherals (monitors, printers, keyboards, mice, scanners), routers, modems, antennas/dishes, servers. Operating Systems we cover server operating systems (grossly divided between MS Windows and Unix (non-windows). Much of the world runs on Unix operating systems and most don't know they exist by name until it's too late.
Networking - Interenet access - you will need a stable, low speed internet connection. Fast Satelite might do or the lowest speed high speed you can get is fine. Internet routing An in home router is ideal for learning the basics of routing and security. The commercial ones are just larger versions of that. DNS Basics For DNS (Domain Name Server) system understanding , reserve one website domain for $11 for one year at Porkbun. You will use their backend to gain understanding of what a domain name is under the hood, what options are required for use and how to configure DNS zone records. DNS Advanced - for your advanced lesson we are going to teach you how to build your own commercial DNS Server network as part of your core eductional process. When done, you will be the owner of software configured for Saas level business offerring that is a DNS Server small business opportunity and you'll know DNS inside and out with ease FTP, Command Line and SSH - you will learn how to access remote servers from your local machine
Website Hosting and Serving - Hosting via integrated sited builder - you will be introduced to Google Sites and a company called Articulation to learn about building websites in a website builder that also offers hosting services. You will also be introducted to a few of the same types of systms that specialize in ecommerce. Traditional Hosting - you rent a space on a server or rent an entire server (or serve from your home computer). We'll explain it and give you the option to setup and account for a month and experience it yourself. End Point Hosting - a commercial offering where you have a url you can share for public or private access that offers limited range of communcation offerrings (Amazon Cloud, Google App, etc). Domain Registration / Registrars - you will reserve a domain name to gain understanding and point that to websites for more. SubDomains - you will learn what a subdomain is and how to register one with Porkbun and/or Google Sites (if you have a google workspace account)
System Architecture and Website Design - You will be introduced to the full range of System Architecture and website design tools and offerings which are a function of where and how you host. Text Editors vs integrated site builders vs VB Console vs Front Page/DreamWeaver. Your hosting platform will dictate / limit your design tool choices.
Websites/Systems - Informational Websites - google sites and Articulation will be used to show you how to quickly publish websites. In as little as 2 minutes. Database Driven Front Ends - some websites will have some database driven technology. Learning how to integrate that with an informational site is important. Ecommerce Sites - you can use informational sites with links for payment or build out websites with full shopping cart systems (ie database front ends). Private Business Systems - websites that use login screens to protect back end systems and information. These can be hosted via cloud services and they can be hosted from within a private network. Saas Systems - These are "Software as a Service" websits that enable website owners (platform owners) to offer business services and systems to resellers and end customers. Your first project includes the security and user framework for a Saas system. that will come easily with your first course. End Points - these are public internet addresses that offer limited services.
Programming Languages - Server Side - Javascript / Google Script / RegEx with side conversations into VBScript, PhP and others. Client Side - Html, CSS, Javascript, RegEx . We dont' deal with Python or others . if you learn on these you can learn all those easily enough.
Website Design Frameworks - React and Node.js Django and others - we do NOT advise using them unless the shoe fits and thats often only in the corporate world or possibly when building complex dashboards or other applications they were minted for. Those are corporate tools that have little use outside of corporate employment. if you want to be employed in a corproate setting they are typically required and easy to learn once you have learned the information above. Learning just those tools is NOT full stack education and it's not even coding education.
